The Mazzella's From Italia Reply

In the 8th Century AD, our ancestors were involved in the Crusades. All those who served had to have Heraldry to identify them in battle. That is a painting shaped like a shield and all were recorded by the French who had orders from the king to the Royal Herald to keep all names and house symbols. Because they painted their Heraldry on their helmet's crest, it became called a family crest. Because it was embroidered on their coats, it became called a "Coat Of Arms".
I will search for the crest that is in the upper left hand corner of this forum. Only the French books have it, if it was indeed recorded.

Our family seems to have arisen during the Dark Ages of Europe. They seem to come from the Napoli (Naples) area of Italy. They became fishermen and left Napoli for nearby islands like Capri and Ischia. Mazzella's prospered in Ischia and then moved out to the nearby Pontine Island's. Most settled on Ponza but others moved to the other smaller islands.

A point of interest on the Island of Palmarola, where San Silverio was exiled and died, is Cava Mazzella or Mazzella Cave which is a natural cave and a popular place to visit.

I have not been able to find that small village named Mazzella, Italia which was east of Napoli. Perhaps the map was in error or it was not a town, but maybe a mountain or physical point of interest. There may be a suburb there with that name or similar. Maybe it was a typo.

After The Mazzella family moved and settled Ponza, family members moved out to almost every part of the planet. I was very surprised to find that many Mazzella's moved to South America. I would have thought it too hot and humid like Africa.

Regarding the names at Ellis Island, my ancestors came to America before Ellis Island was used for immigrants.

They just came to Little Italy, Manhattan Island or Morris Avenue & East 149th Street, in The Bronx where my Grandma Marietta used to live, or East 187th & Arthur Avenue.

Arthur Avenue still has a large Italian population mixed with many Europeans from former East Block nations.

The old public market on Arthur Avenue now has a pizzeria cafe in the back with great pizza slices! It is called Cafe Mercato. Another great pizzeria is Full Moon Pizza on the corner of Arthur Avenue and E 187th Street.

A newer Little Italy has sprung up in the Country Club section of The Bronx. There are several Salumeria's and Pizzeria's and various Italian services.

Even my home town of City Island, Bronx has become an enclave of Italian Americans and Mazzella family members now own much of the island.

Be sure to see City Island in the movie called "The Groomsmen".
