Memorial Day! Reply

About 20 years ago, it was Memorial Day and the locals always have a big parade and a marching band and they fire volleys of 21 Guns Salutes at the Fallen Heroes of this island.

Some of the men in the boatyard were fixing their boats.

They heard the shots and began to recall their days in World War II.

My Dad said he was in the war in Alaska and fought in the Battle of Attu. Most deaths were friendly fire.

Then another man said he fought in the Invasion Of Normandy and he told of his best friend being shot by a Nazi machine gun in a pillbox bunker.

I mentioned that I saw every war movie on TV every broadcast and that I tried to volunteer for the USAF in 1972. I was almost drafted in 1972! I missed the draft lottery.

Andy was from Germany. He also said he was in the war as well.

I asked him: "What division were you in?"

Andy replied, "I was a Tank commander in the Second SS Panzer Division Das Reich during the The Invasion of Normandy and Battle Of The Bulge! I was helping to defend Der Fatherland from invaders.".

"WOW! I was astonished. He survived the biggest bloodiest battle of the war on the enemy side.

"I dont understand, Andy! How could Germany lose the war? You had superior tanks with superior firepower! Your tanks had bigger cannons, your tanks were diesel, not gasoline like USA. You had thicker armor! How did you lose the war?
Your equipment was finer than Americans were!

He said he was in a column of Panzer tanks and had shot at dozens of American tanks and destroyed them all. Then his and others guns seized up after overheating and this rendered the canons useless. They ran out of diesel and had to walk home to Germany only to have the Russians capture him! He said if Germany had 10,000 tanks, then America had 50,000 tanks. The USA outnumbered the Germans and that was the secret. America swamped the Germans.

Andy said he was taken to a camp in Siberia and was only one of 5000 survivors of 5 million German soldiers.

Most Germans in Russian captivity died from lack of food and medicine and abuse.

I stood there astonished and wondered what kind of a world we live in.
