Fun With The Mazzella Family Name! Reply

When I was growing up in PS 17 on City Island, The other kids used to make fun of my odd last name.

They would call me "Mark Mozzarella Cheese" or "Mark Mazola Corn Oil" or "Mark Matzo Ball" or "Mark Magilla Gorilla", ect, ect...

The worst one I saw was during my final exam in 1971 at St Thomas More School, was "Mark Mazzellephant" drawn on a desk!

It was drawn out artistically and under it was a penciled caricature of my face with an Elephant's body and ears and trunk! I erased it, but now I wish I could frame it.

I collect these as jokes and tell them at family get togethers for a good laugh.

So, tell me, what kind of fun did they make of your Mazzella last name?

Hi Mark,

My maiden name was Joan Mazzella, so I got "Mazola Corn Oil", too when anyone bothered to give me a nickname. That was in grade school; by high school, everyone was over it! I, too, graduated from high school in 1971, but in Pennsylvania. In fact, when I saw St. Thomas More, I thought you were in PA, too. What is your Dad's name? My Dad is Thomas Armand Mazzella. His Dad was Armand Thomas Mazzella. Armand was 1st generation in the USA. I think he was from Ischia, but I'm not certain.
